Harry Potter Skiving Snackbox Recipes

To immitate the 4 Skiving Snackbox snacks, deliciously but accurately enough, you'll need:

For all
4 Packages of Marzipan (4 x 200g)
1 Package of ground almonds
1 Package of powdered edible colours (yellow, green, violet, blue. I used "Crazy Colours" of Heitmann Company, worked great!)
aluminium foil or kitchen foil
maybe a rolling pin
a sharp small kitchen knife
a Box for the finished snacks
fine kitchen gloves

For the Fever Fudge

pink end:
powdered beetroot
spices: cumin, cayenne / red pepper, Muscat, curcuma

blue end:
blue colour powder
mint oil (from apothecary)

For the Nosebleed Nougat

red end:
red colour powder
raspberry syrup,
spices: caraway, muscat

brown end:
1-2 teaspoons ground instant coffee
3 teaspoons baking cocoa (min. 60 % pure cocoa), both stirred into 1-2 tablespoon of hot water
half a teaspoon cinnamon

For the Fainting Fancies

violet end:
violet colour powder
1 teaspoon of rose water (apothecary)
1/2 freshly ground tonka bean

yellow end:
yellow colour powder
1/4 teaspoon of ground orange zest
1/4 teaspoon of ground lime or lemon zest
1 tablespoon lime or lemon juice

For the Puking Pastils

green end:
green colour powder
1 tablespoon of sweet woodruff syrup
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of ground lemon or lime zest

white end:
1/4 teaspoon or a bit more of (freshly) ground vanilla
1 small tablespoon of golden syrup

Of course, you are free to alter the recipe, those just worked well for me. I made them with a friend for a big Harry Potter Party and the guests were all curious and had a lot of fun, found them delicious and funny, too.)

That said, here it goes:

For each snack I took one package of marzipan, took one half and cut and tore it into small bits. The smaller those are, the easier it is to work the powders and other ingredients into the marzipan.
This should be the point where you start wearing gloves! ;)
The colour powders work best if first stirred into some liquid.
Working liquids into marzipan isn't that easy, though, so I took the ground almond and kneaded that into the marzipan when it became too sticky or soft.
I tested the texture on my inner forearm, when it didn't stick there, it was well.

I started with the Fever Fudge as this recipe is the trickiest.
I powdered the chopped marzipan with the beetroot powder, which itself gives enough coulour and a nice, sweetish yet earthy, umami-like flavour. Don't be too shy with the cayenne, I had to work it in twice as my first sample was quite boring.
Tasting, you should find that at first, it's more earthy and warm, then, after you swallowed, the sharp, hot cayenne should come through and heat up your mouth. That's the effect I intended! :)
Knead all into the marzipan and do that properly, you want a fine, even, dark pink mass. Put that aside and change or rather clean your gloves.
Now the second half.
Take a teaspoon or two of water and about 5-10 drops of mint oil, it's very strong. Mix the blue powder into the water and drop the oil directly onto the chopped marzipan, then pour the blue liquid over the marzipan and knead all in thoroughly.

Now all you have to do is form little squares out of both masses and but them together to form the double ended chews. I put them into a nice chocolate's box my mom had crafted into a really cool "Weasley's Wizard Wheezes' Skiving Snackbox deluxe", see picture! :)

This working pattern you repeat with the other 3 snacks, working colour powder into liquid, liquid and spices into the marzipan and adding ground almond when needed. :)
It's quite easy once you got started and it's a lot of fun! :)

Note: For the effect intended, the right half must be eaten first. My mum made a little chart to go with the box, with one side for wizards, just naming the snack and which side to eat first. The other side was more informative (for curious muggles) listing flavours / ingredients, too. (see pictures)
In this recipe, I always listed that side first that has to be eaten first.

But to make it easier, here is the list:

Feaver Fudge (dark pink-blue): pink first. Pink hast a warm earthy taste at first, then getting hot. Blue tastes of cool mint.

Nosebleed Nougat (red-brown): red first. red has a taste of Muscat and raspberry, brown tastes of coffee and cocoa

Fainting Fancies (violet-yellow): violet first. Violet tastes of tonka bean and roses. Yellow tastes of lemon, lime and orange.

Puking Pastils (green-white): green first. Green has a taste of woodruff and lime. White tastes of Vanilla and Golden Syrup.

Have FUN! :D
